This fall BCcampus offered a Book Club Hub for book-club leaders to both share and garner skills in facilitating discussions about the difference between non-racist and anti-racist. We invited book-club leaders and those who would be facilitating such conversations at post-secondary institutions across the province to join our Hub. 

Learning was based on the book How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi, where Kendi offers a suggestion of what an anti-racist approach entails while challenging readers to think about their individual role and responsibility in contributing to just and equitable societies. A selection of articles and media also accompanied content from the book as prompts to engage participants in discussion over the eight weeks, focused on the following areas:

• Act I: Self and Schemas
• Act II: Society and Systems 
• Act III: Schools and Syllabus
• Act IV: Success and Solidarity

A key outcome of the Book Club Hub is a facilitator’s guide, created by BCcampus learning advisor Olaolu Adeleye. This guide will be available in January 2022. 

Using one of the guide’s exercises, in our final synchronous session, participants in the Book Club Hub collaborated to create the following anti-racism statement:
